Brussels, 18/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - The prime minister of Turkey, Bülent Ecevit, has promised that Turkey will surprise the European Union by getting the reforms the EU requires passed. Leader of a government without a majority, a few months ahead of early elections (see yesterday's Europe, p.6), Bülent Ecevit pledged that the last efforts of his government would be see the reforms adopted. The Turkish parliament is expected to be reconvened for an extraordinary session this summer. Calling for people to look beyond party divides, on television on Wednesday night he said he believed that they could find a solution among themselves. "I am optimistic", he said, adding that if they could do that, they would surprise the EU.
