EU condemns Tel Aviv suicide bombings

Copenhagen, 18/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - After a meeting in Copenhagen on Thursday with the Palestinian Minister for Information and Culture, Yasser Abed Rabbo, the Danish foreign minister and acting President of the EU's General Affairs Council, Per Stig Moller, said he had "conveyed to Mr Rabbo the EU's strong condemnation of the recent terror attacks including the two that took place yesterday in Tel Aviv and urged the Palestinian Authority to do everything within their power to stop these attacks and bring the perpetrators to justice". Stig Moller "informed Mr Rabbo about the recent meeting in the Middle East Quartet see yesterday's Europe, p.5, Ed and mentioned the decision to establish working groups to assist and monitor he Palestinian reform process. I stated that the EU and the Quartet are determined not to let terrorists destroy the drive towards peace. I informed Mr Rabbo that the Quartet would meet again in September in order to take stock of the reform process and the situation on the ground. I encouraged the Palestinians to pick up on the combined offers from the United States, Jordan and Egypt to help reform the security services. At the same time I emphasised the necessity of addressing the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian areas." Stig Moller said that to re-establish confidence necessary to re-launch political negotiations… "requires Israeli cooperation as well, including withdrawal from advanced positions, scaling down of the closure regime and de-freezing of Palestinian assets."
