Bulent Ecevit accuses EU of complicating situation

Brussels, 17/07/2002 (Agence Europe) - Receiving a delegation on Monday headed by the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Turkish prime minister Bulent Ecevit said that the EU in recent years was too involved in the Cyprus conflict which "is why a solution that could satisfy both Turkish and Greek Cypriots could not be found…. There are very few countries that should be involved in the Cyprus conflict and these are turkey, Greece, Turkish Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and Britain", added Ecevit according to reports in the Turkish news agency Anatolia: "But unfortunately, the European Union got too involved with this issue in recent years and made it even more complicated… Because the more the EU is involved in this issue, the more resistant the Greek Cypriots are getting. … They don't even accept the most reasonable demands".
