MEPs want to interview Solana and Presidency about reform of Council

Brussels, 30/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament's Development Committee is concerned about the impact the reform of the Council might have on European development co-operation policy. In a letter he recently sent to the Secretary General of the Council, Javier Solana, the President of the Development Committee Joaquim Miranda (Portuguese Communist) notes that the options under consideration of reducing the number of Council formations to ten and/or setting up an "External Relations" Council could lead to the Development Council disappearing. Miranda wrote in his letter that the Convention is currently examining the role of the Council in the future EU institutional set-up in a general manner and is would therefore seem premature for the current Presidency of the Council and Solana to take measures without holding the appropriate consultations and anticipating certain decisions. He called on Solana to come and present his views at a special meeting of the Development Committee on the fringes of the plenary session in Strasbourg on 10 June. In his letter, Miranda writes that if this date does not suit Javier Solana, he could address the normal Committee meeting held in Brussels on 19/20 June, or ahead of the European Council of Seville that will be discussion the reform of the Council. The Spanish Presidency was also invited to give its views on this issue at its 20 June meeting.
