Korean reaction to Commission investigation into ship yards

Seoul, 10/05/2002 (Agence Europe) - Following the adoption by the Commission, on Tuesday, of the new version of its investigation into unfair trade practices by South Korean shipbuilders (see EUROPE of 8 May, page 12), a high-level representative from the Korean Ministry for Trade, Industry and Energy, Moon Jae-Do, felt that the "EU simply confirms that its position concerning Korean shipbuilders has not changed. We will wait until the EU governments sort out their concerted position and then we will take appropriate action", he added. Ahn Wook-Hyun, spokesperson for Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering, world number two in the sector, felt for its part that "the allegations on subsidies are not right because Korean shipbuilders are selling their ships for profits". Let us recall that South Korea rejects the accusations from Brussels and asserts that the Europeans shipyards must be restructured, as where the Korean yards, to become more competitive.
