12/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - Adopting the report of Irish Green MEP, Patricia McKenna, the EP has modified its joint Council position concerning the recommendation on the implementation of an integrated coastal-zone management strategy in Europe. Parliament approved the report with the additional six compromise amendments, negotiated with the Council and accepted by the Commission. Member States will be obliged to take into account good practices identified in the framework of the demonstration programme set up by the Commission. The Parliament is also requesting that coastal towns and their cultural heritage be protected. Another amendment calls on Member States to notify the Commission of the results from the implementation of the recommendation 45 months (instead of five years) after its adoption. A re-examination is expected after 55 months instead of six years.
