EP supports relaunch of Barcelona process

Strasbourg, 12/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - The adoption of the report by Spanish Liberal, Pere Esteve, demonstrates the European Parliament's support for the Spanish Presidency' efforts to relaunch, during the Euro-Mediterranean meeting on 22-23 April, the Barcelona Process. Parliament is using this report as a means to arrange an annual Summit for countries aligned to the Barcelona Process and for setting up a Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly. Parliament believes that the European Council of Barcelona's proposals and the decision of the ECOFIN Council, are not in contradiction with the intention of creating a Euro-Mediterranean Bank for Development: it considers that the creation of a strengthened investment mechanism at the EIB constitutes "a first positive step for encouraging the immediate flow of investments in this perspective". (For other aspects of this report, see EUROPE 6 April page 14).
