Brussels, 05/04/2002 (Agence Europe) - Greece's Free Citizens' Movement (KEP), led by the Mayor of Athens Dimitris Avramopoulos (who created the movement in March 2000) was unanimously accepted as a new member of the Group of the Liberal Democrat and Reform Party chaired by Werner Hoyer, at a meeting in Brussels on Friday evening. Addressing the ELDR Council meeting in Brussels (see other article), Mr Avramopoulos said his party hoped to be able to stand in the next European elections, and that in the meantime, his objective was to win seats at the upcoming Greek general elections (an information note explains that various polls suggest the party could get 10% of the vote). Mr Avramopoulos said there was a pre-election fever in the air in Greece, criticising both the party in government (Pasok) and the main opposition party (Nea Demokratia) of causing a downturn in Greece's fortunes. On the European front, we agree with the objective of the ELDR party, he said, to give the EU its own Constitution, stressing that his party's ambition was to strengthen European identity and cohesion.
