Brussels, 25/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - In the framework of strengthened co-operation to combat doping in sport, the Spanish secretary of state for sport, Juan Antonio Gomez Angulo and the Sports Commissioner Viviane Reding will be meeting Latin American sports ministers (the Spanish-American Sports Council) in Lima for the first time on 25/26 March to discuss anti-doping measures, professionalisation of sport, violence and the social function of sport. The meeting will be attended by the sports ministers of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela and the Portuguese sports minister (who is the President this year of one of the regional Spanish-American Sports Council's sections). Ms Reding will be outlining the results of the ministerial conference of 20 March (see EUROPE OF 22 March, p.10) where it was decided to set up a working group on improving the legality and therefore effectiveness of sanctions imposed by sporting federations for doping offences. She will also outline how the EU is planning to apply its objective of zero tolerance for doping in time for the Athens Olympics in 2004. The Commissioner will meet with the Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo and several members of the Peruvian government, including the education minister, before visiting a humanitarian project supported by the EU in a deprived suburb of Lima.
