Cape Town, 25/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption of a resolution on Cuba, the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly welcomes the determination expressed by the Cuban government to begin political dialogue with the European Union on all subjects of common interest, mainly on human rights, and to accept and respect all the principles contained in the Cotonou Agreement. It invites the Spanish Presidency to pursue the political dialogue resumed by the Belgian Presidency. It considers that Cuba should again make a request to come under the Cotonou Agreement, and that it would be appropriate to give a swift response to this request, as soon as it has been made. The Assembly invites the ACP-EU Council of Ministers to ensure that a possible request for accession by Cuba is treated in an equitable and impartial way and in the same conditions as those imposed on the other signatories of the Agreement. It encourages the Commission to strengthen its cooperation efforts, mainly with civil and non-governmental organisations existing in Cuba. It welcomes the Commission's decision to open a delegation in La Havana and calls for a timetable to be fixed for implementing this decision.
