19/03/2002 (Agence Europe) - Romano Prodi described his meeting with the President of Georgia, Edward Sheverdnadze, on Tuesday, as useful and amicable. Subjects for discussion included EU commitment to help the country overcome its structural economic problems and fight against corruption and international criminality. Mr Prodi carefully avoided mentioning Georgia's wish to join the European Union in the "not too distant future" (see EUROPE yesterday page 5), whereas Mr Sheverdnadze is of the opinion that the EU "would be bigger and more powerful" if it included his country.
