Agreement on EU employment incentives

Brussels, 27/02/2002 (Agence Europe) - Meeting in the evening of 26 February under the joint chairmanship of the Vice-President of the European Parliament, Renzo Imbeni, and the Spanish Labour Minister Juan Carlos Aparicio Perez, the Parliament/Council Conciliation Committee reached agreement on the proposed decision on Community incentive measures in the field of employment (along with EUR 55 million in aid to support the incentives). The measures aim to encourage co-operation between the Member States and support their action in the field of employment, in particular concerning efforts to secure full employment in accordance with the decision taken at the Lisbon European Council in March 2000 to reach full employment by 2010. The incentives are an important element in support of the European Employment Strategy and the "last missing piece to complete the implementation of the Employment Title of the Treaty (Article 129)", points out a Council press release. Once the agreement has been confirmed by both institutions - by a vote in plenary for Parliament (absolute majority of votes cast) and through qualified majority formal adoption for the Council.
