De Sarnez Report calls for European quality label for higher education

Brussels, 26/02/2002 (Agence Europe) - By unanimously adopting the Marielle De Sarnez Report (France, EPP-ED) on the Commission's communication on strengthening co-operation with third countries regarding higher education, the EP's Committee on Culture and Education considers that the EU has to "offer high-level education, so as to be more competitive on the international training market". To guarantee an equal quality of education in European higher education establishments, the Parliamentary Committee: 1) urges the European Commission to study, in close co-operation with the European Association of Universities, the establishment of a European quality label on all models of transnational education; 2) recommends that Member States systematically set up foreign language training in all parts of higher education; 3) calls on the EU to promote the creation of a common cycle of studies between the universities of the different Member States, leading to the awarding of common diplomas. This report will be voted on in plenary in Brussels in April.
