19/02/2002 (Agence Europe) - "I say this clearly: we do not recognise ourselves in the vision of Europe developed by Tony Blair and Silvio Berlusconi", Laurent Peillon, spokesman for the French Socialist Party (PS), told the press on Monday. Friday, Blair and Berlusconi and the President of the Italian Council had stressed their identity of views on economic reforms in the EU, stipulating that they foremost required flexibility in the labour market (see EUROPE of 15 February, p.14). For Vincent Peillon, on the other hand, "Europe cannot and must not be excessive flexibility in the labour market, the opening up to competition of all markets and the dismantling of public services". "It is absolutely essential that our concept of Europe, more politically integrated, more democratic, more harmonised tax-wise placing its concerns for growth, employment and public services at the heart (…) be reaffirmed", he added.
