Awareness-raising campaign on European directive on working time

Brussels, 19/02/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU) has launched a major awareness-raising campaign on the EU working time directive so as to strengthen the text and ensure its complete implementation. Under the slogan: "Treat Healthcare Staff with a Strong Working Time Directive", this campaign, which has received total support by Commissioner Anna Diamantopoulou, the Deputy General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), Jean Lapeyre and the European Parliament rapporteur on the subject, Ioannis Koukiadis, will continue until 2004. It will focus on the healthcare sector, given, explains EPSU, that "it represents one of the worst examples of implementation of the 1993 working time directive". It then recalls that doctors-in-training in hospitals, in many EU countries, work over the maximum 48 hours stipulated by the directive.
