First visit of Mr Nielson to Indian Ocean area

Brussels, 14/02/2002 (Agence Europe) - Poul Nielson will be visiting three ACP countries on 15-22 February, the first time he has visited the Indian Ocean in his role of European Commissioner.

Mozambique (15-19 February, Mr Nielson will meet President Chissano and Prime Minister Mocumbi. He will also sign the strategic document (EUR 329 million), part of the Cotonou Agreement, and funding of EUR 30 million for assistance in the health service (particularly for dealing with AIDS).

Mauritius (19-22 February), he will meet the government and opposition, as well as representatives from civil society and sign the strategic document (EUR 34.6 million). In Port Louis, he will participate in the Council of Ministers from the Indian Ocean Committee.

Seychelles (22-23 February), he will meet the government, opposition and civil society and visit the Island of Praslin, which will be at the centre of the next co-operation programme (EUR 3.9).
