Brussels, 18/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission is preparing a document to help companies negotiating mergers to formulate solid corrective measures to ensure the bids do not run the risk of distorting competition, announced the European Competition Commissioner, Mario Monti, in an address to the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines in Paris last Friday. In his speech, the Commissioner outlined the objectives of the communication on acceptable corrective measures for resolving competition queries concerning merger and acquisition deals that the Commission adopted (a year after it was first unveiled) in December 2000. He also outlined measures in last December's Green Paper, stressing the importance of businesses respecting the deadlines. At present, he said, deadlines are not usually met, which does not leave the European Commission enough time to consider the proposes deals properly. He stressed the Commission was open for discussions with the interested parties, formally or informally, before they notify their plans One of the measures in the Green Paper is to relax the deadlines for companies to submit proposals for rectifying competition concerns.
