Brussels, 10/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - In the telecommunications sector, Spain plans to take advantage of its six-month term of EU Council Presidency to implement a two-part programme. The first part concerns harmonisation of legislation and liberalisation of the sector. Madrid mainly sets itself the task of definitively adopting the directive on data protection. The second part deals with the need to launch reflection on the future of technological convergence. Concerning the information society, the Presidency considers it will be necessary to re-launch the e-EUROPE 2002 initiative and to assign it new objectives.
