08/01/2002 (Agence Europe) - At the end of the year, Médecins sans frontières (MSF) launched an initiative called IDEME (Intervention pour les droits des étrangers malades en Europe - Action for foreigners with health problems in Europe) to provide a mechanism to prevent seriously ill foreigners living in Europe without the necessary permits from being deported. The organisation has provided MEPs with a document "Protéger ou expulser? Une question pour l'Europe" ("Protect or deport? A question for European"), following which MEPs, such as the Socialists Claude Moraes, José Maria Mendiluce Pereiro, Anna Terron I Cusi, Martin Schultz, Anne Van Lancker and Adeline Hazan immediately committed themselves to look into the issue. The Commissioner for Justice and Home Affairs, Antonio Vitorino, commented that the Commission had not paid enough attention to the issue of access to health care for such people and it had to take notice, adding that the issue had to be raised with all governments and the European Parliament.
