03/12/2001 (Agence Europe) - Commissioner David Byrne seized the opportunity provided last week by the third negotiating round in Geneva on the draft framework WHO agreement on tobacco control to stress the European Union's commitment to trying to reduce smoking. He highlighted the measures proposed by the Commission to gradually cut back aid for tobacco producers to encourage them to start growing other crops. The WHO negotiations will start up again in March 2002.
