THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) ep/future of europe

28/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, the President of the European Council, Guy Verhofstadt, met the President of the European Parliament's Constitutional Committee, Giorgio Napolitano, and rapporteurs from the Parliament, Jo Leinen and Innigo Mendez de Vigo, in view of the Laeken Summit and the future of Europe (see other news on the subject of the plenary debate). A European Parliament press release indicated that Mr Verhofstadt had introduced elements that could figure in the draft of the Declaration of Laeken to MEPs and that they had made a number of practical suggestions on the organisation of the Convention's work, which will be prepared at the next IGC. Since his first visits to European Union capital cities, the Belgian Prime Minister has emphasised that a "draft" declaration did not yet exist and that it was, for the time being, a rough outline.
