Brussels, 28/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Union and Cuba should relaunch their political dialogue during a meeting on 30 November in Havana at the level of senior officials. The European delegation will be headed by the Secretary General of the Belgian Foreign Ministry, Jan de Bock, and not by Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel (held up for agenda and health reasons according to official sources). This is the first meeting of this kind since the suspension of the political dialogue in April 2000. Cuba had cancelled a visit by a European delegation one year ago, as a sign of protest against the support given by the EU to a United Nations resolution on human rights in Cuba, and against maintaining the EU's common position on Cuba adopted in 1996 and renewed every six months since then. During a visit to La Havana at the beginning of the Belgian EU Council President, Louis Michel had announced that the European Union was willing to rekindle dialogue without preconditions (see EUROPE of 29 August, p.3).
