Meeting on Monday to settle Turkish issue

Brussels, 21/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States should meet on 26 November in Ankara to seek to reach a final agreement between the EU and NATO on the use of Atlantic Alliance planning and command capabilities for EU-led operations in the context of ESDP, announced Sabahattin Cakmakoglu, Turkey's Minister for Defence, on Tuesday in Brussels. The minister pointed out to the press that Turkey is willing to be flexible and imaginative without committing itself to concluding an agreement. The dispute concerns Turkey's participation in the decision-making process that will lead to the launching of action by the future European rapid reaction force, with the use of NATO assets. The aim is to reach an agreement before the Laeken Summit, where the Heads of State and Government are expected to declare that the European force is operational (or the road to becoming so: see the recent remarks by the British EU Permanent Representative, Nigel Sheinwald, in EUROPE of 7 November, p.7).
