The case of Spanish flax will not be discussed in plenary

Strasbourg, 15/11/2001 (Agence Europe) - Despite support notably from the Green/European Free Alliance and the United Left Nordic Green Left groups, the Socialist Group did not secure from the Conference of Presidents in Strasbourg Thursday afternoon, inclusion on the agenda of December's plenary session of an oral question on a case of fraud in the Spanish flax sector. The Socialist Group wanted to ask the European Commission how it intended dealing with the affair, given that, following a special OLAF report, its bodies responsible in the matter imposed a record fine on the Spanish Government of 126 million euro, equal to 100% of aid received by the sector between 1996 and 1999. The EPP-ED Group opposed such an issue being included on the agenda in plenary, considering that it was an affair that was rather the competence of the Committee on Budgetary Control, and the liberal Group backed that stance.
