The case related to the death of 157 employees at this plant, attributed to oncogenic substances with which the employees were in contact. In their declaration, the European parliamentarians wax indignant against this decision that "goes against the objectives and instruments of European social policy". "At the Lisbon Summit, the EU reaffirmed its commitment to an economic and social model that promotes a good job, sustainable development and quality of work, protection and improvements in the work place, health and safety of workers", the parliamentarians declare, calling, moreover, on the Italian Government to commit itself to decontaminating the port area of Marghera.
