Commission adopts communication on structural indicators

Brussels, 30/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - On 30 October, the European Commission adopted a communication on structural indicators in order to present a new list of indicators to be used in the synthesis report for the Spring 2002 European Council in Barcelona (continuation Lisbon strategy). The communication describes the progress accomplished to make Europe the most competitive and most innovative economy in the world, in order to increase its growth potential and reach full employment, in conformity with the strategy established at the Lisbon Summit in March 2000. There have been limited changes to the new list of structural indicators to ensure a high degree of stability: nine new indicators have been added to the list and 8 indicators dropped from last year's list (see EUROPE of 2/2/01 and 11/12/00). New indicators mainly concern the environmental aspects of sustainable development (climate change, sustainable transport, threats to public health and managing natural resources), but also gender equality, technologies and the information society. EUROPE will come back to this.
