Extraordinary ministerial meeting in Agadir

Agadir, 24/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - Eleven Foreign Ministers of the Mediterranean rim countries (France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt and Malta) are holding, on 25 and 26 October in Agadir, an extraordinary meeting on the fight against terrorism, in the context of the Mediterranean Forum, an informal consultation structure set up in 1994, dating back to before the Barcelona Process. According to a press release from Morocco (the meeting was convened at the initiative of King Mohammed VI), discussions will cover "security aspects" and allow "the socio-economic and cultural consequences of this crisis on the Mediterranean region" to be examined. Participants also intend to discuss the strengthening of the role of the forum as a flexible and informal framework for dialogue and consultation on the major challenges facing the region and on the situation in the Middle East. They hope to promote a strong and peaceful image of the Mediterranean, reflecting the economic, cultural and human potential with which this "cradle of humanity overflows".
