Luxembourg, 09/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - The Standing Employment Committee was chaired by Laurette Onkelinx in Luxembourg on 8 October, where it debated the Employment 2001 package against the new global political and macroeconomic background. They also discussed the quality of work, making the same comments as the Council (see yesterday's EUROPE, p.10). The workers' representatives stressed the need to: ensure that the overall package of measures can cope with the aftermath of 11 September; ensure that the European employment strategy is relevant to current circumstances (raising the issue of changing the guidelines to add the explicit right to professional training and setting more ambitious objectives for giving the unemployed a new start); improving the quality of employment through legislation and/or agreements between social partners, and through the employment strategy. The employers' representatives stressed the importance of restoring confidence by launching a new multilateral trade round; pursuing structural reforms, particularly of the labour market; ensuring that the search for high quality work does not reduce the number of jobs created; and putting the "enterpreneurship" pillar guidelines fully into action.
