More small denomination notes

Brussels, 05/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Central Bank has noted the concern of shopkeepers who may have to cope with a massive influx of large denomination notes in the first days of the introduction of the euro and signalled on Friday that it was increasing the number of small denomination notes that will be put into circulation on 1 January. Some ATMs will therefore be loaded with euro 5 and 10 notes, although they were initially only programmed to receive euro 50 and 100 notes. The ECB commented that the total number of notes brought into circulation would be increased by the extra small denomination notes. The total number of notes will therefore rise from 14.25 billion to 14.89 billion in the twelve countries in the European monetary area.
