Brussels, 01/10/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Friday, the JHA Council took note of a Commission progress report on the measures taken by Romania to improve its border control and document security mechanisms. The Commission signalled that it would soon be unveiling a proposal to lift the visa requirement for Romanians, and that the JHA Council would rule on this on 6/7 December.
The Romanian Prime Minister, Adrian Nastase, welcomed this "encouraging" information for Romanians travelling in the EU despite the recent events that threaten to see Western country entry conditions tightened up. Mr Nastase said that his country met most of the conditions posed by the EU for the scrapping of the requirement.
