20/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - During Wednesday's debate at the European Parliament on the fight against terrorism (see yesterday's EUROPE, p.10), not only the president of the Council, Annemie Neyts, but also European Commissioner Antonio Vitorino stressed the need to overcome the problem of veto in such matters, while expressing their confidence in the Member States' will to cooperate. The French elected member of the EPP Group, Philippe Morillon, who reproached the EU for not knowing how to respond to the pressing requests of Commander Massod in Afghanistan, felt that, given the threat of terrorism, "we will be forced to review our common defence policy but also work in setting up a new world order allowing Europe in particular to commit itself more in the settlement of regional conflicts" (the former general also hoped the EU would draw the consequences of this situation during the second reading of the budget 2002). John Cushnahan, Irish member of the same group, criticised the United States saying that, by saying that they wish to catch someone "dead or alive", this is language that is only fit for cowboys, not for responsible leaders.
