Parliament demands measures against Mugabe Regime

Strasbourg, 07/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - By adopting a resolution on Zimbabwe, during an emergency debate, the European Parliament is calling on the country to once again resolve the issue of land distribution by legal, democratic and transparent means. It has demanded that: 1) the European Commission ensures that humanitarian and food aid is not intercepted by ZANU-PF activists, and that all development aid be suspended until democracy is fully restored; 2) the French government to support the position adopted by other EU Member States and reduce or suspend its financial commitments in Zimbabwe (81 votes for this motion, 32 against and 2 abstentions); 3) the Council and European Commission take measures against Zimbabwe in accordance with Article 96 of the Cotonou Agreement, before the joint ACP-EU Parliamentary Assembly on 29 October; 4) at its informal meeting at Genval on 8-9 September, the European Council prepares practical measures to be taken to put pressure on President Mugabe, and adopts a joint resolution during its General Affairs Council on 8 October and takes the necessary steps to record and freeze the assets held in Member States by Associate and Candidate countries by President Mugabe, his family and close collaborators; 5) the Heads of State of the Commonwealth, meeting in Brisbane of 6-9 October suspend Zimbabwe from the Commonwealth; 6) the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund prepares to suspend its loans to the Zimbabwe government.
