GENERAL NEWS / (eu) eu/competition

05/09/2001 (Agence Europe) - Ms Carly Fiorina, Director General of the US IT company Hewlett-Packard, has signalled that she will be meeting the European Competition Commissioner, Mario Monti, in the next few weeks and that she wanted to work with him in a cooperative spirit. The US company has in fact just announced its acquisition of its counterpart Compaq for ÜSD 25 billion by exchange of shares, creating a new global information technology giant that will directly rival the current Number 1, IBM. Given the huge share of the market held by the merged company, the operation may be questioned by the US (and also the EU's) anti-trust authorities. (In July 2001, the European Commission vetoed the merger of the US companies General Electric and Honeywell.)
