09/08/2001 (Agence Europe) - Macedonians and ethnic-Albanian Macedonians finally managed to initial a peace agreement on Wednesday that should be signed on Monday, but violence on the ground continues. "The political process will continue until Monday 13 August, date at which the text of the political agreement (..) will be formally signed by the different parties", declared the European mediator, Francois Leotard. The question of the demilitarisation of the UCK is, however, still in suspense, whereas an Albanian guerrilla attack killed ten Macedonian soldiers on Wednesday. Javier Solana, EU High Representative for Cfsp, condemned the attack, especially, he said, that it came at a time when "the leadership of the country is about to finalise a far-reaching political agreement". NATO remains set to send 3,500 troops on the ground to monitor the disarmament of the UCK, on condition that the peace agreement has been signed and that the Albanian rebels agree to hand in their weapons. EP President Nicole Fontaine considered that "the players (…) and facilitators have shown lucidity in bringing their points of view together", and the EU was able to affirm "its political will to develop a genuine foreign policy" and play "a decisive role with NATO representatives".
