09/08/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has adopted a 11.8 million euro humanitarian programme for Sahraouri refugees, victims of the conflict between Morocco and the Polisario Front in Western Sahara. Having taken refuge in the region of Tindouf, in Algeria, a large part of the Sahraouri population is "totally dependent on international assistance", often "inadequate" faced with this "forgotten crisis", the Commission stresses in a press release. This comprehensive plan for 2001 aims to ensure a variety and greater balance in the diet, to cover urgent needs in non-food areas and respond to the needs of particularly vulnerable categories (children, pregnant women and feeding mothers). The Commission has already granted humanitarian aid to the Sahraoui refugees for a total of 3.77 million this year.
