Brussels, 02/08/2001 (Agence Europe) - Macedonians and Albanians of Macedonia finally reached agreement Wednesday afternoon on the use of Albanian in areas comprising at least 20% Albanian-speakers, as well as in Parliament, whereas Macedonian would remain the only language spoken within the Government. "We reached agreement among the four political parties on the question of language, but this agreement depends on the outcome of talks as a whole, notably on the police", declared Francois Leotard, European Union representative in Macedonia, at the end of talks. All is not yet settled, and some Albanian sources hinted that they could withdraw their agreement if not satisfied with talks on the decentralisation of the police. Negotiations are to resume on Friday.
