Brussels, 31/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, the European Commission transmitted to the Czech Prime Minister Milos Zeman and the Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel a working paper, that summarised the results of the trilateral expert mission formed by the Commission with Czech and Austrian participation, to find a solution to the problem of the Temelin nuclear power plant in the Czech Republic. In the "Melk Protocol", the two countries had agreed to call on the Commission to establish this group of nuclear experts, to form a calm and objective dialogue on the safety of the nuclear power plant located close to the Austrian border. The role of the Commission in this process was not to assess the technical safety of the power plant, but to facilitate the dialogue between the two countries in view of finding an acceptable solution for all. The Commission refuses, at this stage, to make its report public, but it asserted on Tuesday, in a Communiqué, that the three way talks achieved "significant progress" on all of the 29 subjects discussed and that it allow to narrow gaps in understanding. The issue of Temelin nevertheless remains on the table, also in the framework of the accession negotiations with the Czech Republic.
