Brussels, 31/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday, the European Commission decided to finance a European observer mission for the elections of the Constitutive Assembly in East Timor on 30 August. One million euro will serve to finance the mission, as well as information and awareness-raising measures for the elections. The observer mission, headed by Wolfgang Kreissl-Dorfler MEP (German, Green), will be there five days before the elections and remain for twelve days after the ballot to monitor the count and the declaration of the results. The United Nations' Provisional Administration in East Timor had asked the EU to send such a mission. The Constitutive Assembly will be responsible for drafting and adopting a Constitution for an independent East Timor.
