Brussels, 11/07/2001 (Agence Europe) - During the weekly meeting the European Commissioner, Vivian Reding, who is responsible for sports, explained on Wednesday to her colleagues the reasons for which, it is not possible, today, for the Commission to present a proposal on an EU contribution to the financing of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WAA). Among these reasons are notably the under representation of the EU within the decision-making body of the WAA, which would thus be able to impose its financial decision on the Community. Mrs Reding wants to rapidly begin negotiations with the WAA to find a solution. In the meantime, the Commission will continue to support the WAA pilot projects. EUROPE will return to this story.
