THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) greece/turkey

25/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - At the end of two days of meetings between their foreign ministers, Georges Papandreou and Ismail Cem, Greece and Turkey decided to cooperate on what the ministers called five "low impact" issues, which are: border cooperation to facilitate the movement of persons and goods; - the setting up of a mechanism to deal with common problems, like natural disasters; - the setting up of a direct line of communications between ministries for immediate issues that may arise; - scientific cooperation on "Mediterranean amnesia", or thalassamaemia, a congenital blood disease particularly common in the Mediterranean that can prove fatal unless patients receive adequate blood transfusions; - the role that Turkey could play on the occasion of the organisation of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and the Greek initiative for an "Olympic Truce".
