Brussels, 18/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - In a press release, British Liberal-Democrat Andrew Duff queries the viability of the accession process of the Republic of Cyprus, recalling that Article 50 of the 1960 Constitution provides the Turkish Cypriot community with the "right of veto" for joining international organisations of which Turkey is not a member.. Mr. Duff also criticizes the draft report by the Luxembourg Socialist Jacques Poos on Cyprus, that is to be examined by the EU's Foreign Affairs Committee, with the other interim reports on the enlargement process, in the second week of July. "Mr. Poos is wildly optimistic about the current state of play with regard to the Republic of Cyprus and displays a partiality between the two Cypriot communities which is unworthy of the European Parliament", says Duff, announcing that he would be presenting an amendment to the report.
Two other reports on Turkey and Romania should also be the subject of a large number of amendments.
