Patten would like Barcelona process to come up with concrete results

Brussels, 18/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - In Rabat, where he was on an official visit ion Monday before moving on to Tunisia, Commissioner Chris Patten called on the partners to the Barcelona Process to "deliver concrete results". "Nothing would constitute a more positive signal of our mutual determination to push forward with the Barcelona Process than concerted efforts to speed-up negotiations, the signing and ratification of the Association Agreements", he declared in an address before diplomats and journalists. Mr. Patten tabled on the signing by Egypt "before the summer break" and the end of talks with Algeria and the Lebanon "by the end of the year", those with Syria "a little later", or "in time for the Barcelona V Summit" in Valencienne in April (…) It is clear to all that we have attained the critical mass necessary for our ambitious projects". Patten also confirmed the EU's will to - broach the agricultural negotiations, which will begin with Morocco at the end of the month, with frankness and honesty, by aiming for a gradual and reciprocal liberalisation in this sensitive sector; - support the sub-regional integration initiative launched by Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Jordan, anyway possible, including by contributing, via the EIB, towards the development of infrastructures (transport, energy, communication) and through "cumulation of origin; - begin talks with Morocco over immigration the engine of a wider movement towards region cooperation in justice and home affairs in the framework of the Barcelona process, by aiming as of this year for progress on the treatment of asylum seekers and refugees, judicial cooperation (transparency and access to justice) and in the fight against drug trafficking and organised crime.
