Brussels, 14/06/2001 (Agence Europe) - The new Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi seized the opportunity of an in-depth conversation, Wednesday evening, with Commission President Romano Prodi to iron out some misunderstandings on his government's European positions. He stated, notably: - Italy is aligned on the common EU position over the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol; - it intends respecting the budgetary commitments of the "Stability Pact"; - it has established no link between EU enlargement, which has its full support and aid to its regions lagging behind in development. On these three points, some statements by Berlusconi's collaborators had raised concerns in Brussels.
