Demonstration in London in support of worker information and consultation

Brussels, 16/05/2001 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday, 17 May, the trade union movement is organising a demonstration, in London, to protest against the practice of Marks & Spencer (which, we recall, announced on 29 March that it would close its stores in continental Europe, without the trade union representatives of its employees being informed or consulted beforehand). The demonstration is also in support of the workers of this multinational who run the risk of losing their jobs. The announcement of the demonstration was made by the General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC), Emilio Gabaglio, during a public hearing held at the EP on 25 April on whether or not it was appropriate to review the directive on European works councils (see EUROPE of 28 April, p.15). Trade unionists from Great Britain, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Germany and the Netherlands will be taking part in the demonstration that will set off at 13h00 at Park Road, W1. Banners will refer to the campaign to "Save our Jobs" and to workers' right to information and consultation. Information: Wim Bergans, ETUC in Brussels. Tel.: 02 224 04 30.
