Veterinary Committee decides to suspend European meat imports from southern Brazil

Brussels, 16/05/2001 (Agence Europe) - Among the decisions adopted on Tuesday evening by the European Union's (EU) Standing Veterinary Committee (SVC), are the suspension of imports into the Community of meats from southern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul region), of species susceptible of contracting foot and mouth disease. The imports of deboned fresh meats produced before 9 May (date of the emergence of the first cases) remains authorised. The SVC agreed to allow the resumption of imports of deboned fresh meat 30 days after the end of the vaccination campaign that has just been carried out by the Brazilian authorities. The measures adopted concern: - Community restrictions: the restrictions applicable to movements of live bovines and porcine will be eased. The authorisation from the competent authorities in the Member States from where the animals, from regions previously submitted to restrictions, leave will still be necessary, though a simple notification to the veterinary authorities of the destination Member States will suffice (an official authorisation is no longer required). The restrictions covering the movements of ovine and caprine remain enforced. - Netherlands: as of next week, the transport of live bovine and porcine will be permitted from Dutch farms directly towards an abattoir located in anther Member States, after notification of the destination Member State and that of transit. This decision only applies to animals from the regions located in the south of the river axis Rijn-Wall-Merwede and west of the A27 motorway.
