Parliament lifts immunity of Jeggle but not that of Sichrovsky or Voggenhuber

Brussels, 04/05/2001 (Agence Europe) - By adopting the report by Neil MacCormick (British Green/EFA), in Brussels on Thursday, the European Parliament decided to lift the immunity of Elisabeth Jeggle (German, EPP/ED) at the request of the prosecutors' office of Thubingen in the framework of a prosecution against her for dangerous driving. Ms. Jeggle is accused of having seriously endangered two other road users by overtaking without sufficient visibility.

By adopting two reports by the French Socialist Francois Zimeray, Parliament did not lift the immunity of the two members concerned, the prosecutions concerning words spoken in the framework of political activities. These are Austrian Green Johannes Voggenhuber who called Mr. Haider a fascist at a press conference, and Peter Sichrovsky, member of Haider's FPO who told a Slovenian newspaper that the leader of the Jewish community in Vienna, Mr. Muzicant, was an "idiot", "an aggressive person, incredibly miserly", and "professional Jew who would use his dead parents to get onto television."
