Brussels, 22/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - During an official two day visit to Egypt, Commissioner Pascal Lamy should meet, Friday and Saturday, with the country's authorities, including the Prime Minister Astef Ebeid, and the leaders of regional organisations including the Secretary General of the Arab League. The discussion will mainly cover trade (with a 36% share, the EU is the main partner for Egypt with whom trade has doubled in the space of five years) as well as over the preparation of the ministerial conference of the World Trade Organisation that should take place next 5 to 9 November in Qatar. Also to be discussion will be the association agreement that must be soon signed between the EU and Egypt as well as the regional integration projects in the Western Mediterranean in relation with the Barcelona process. During his visit, Mr Lamy should also examine with the Egyptian authorities the possibilities for support, notably in the form of technical assistance, for the acceleration of economic reforms.
