Brussels, 22/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - "I am concerned and irritated by the turn the affair of the request for the lifting of Silvio Berlusconi's and Marcello Dell'Uri's parliamentary immunity has taken", European Parliament President Nicole Fontaine told a few journalists after a press conference held by Enrique Baron and Martin Schulz, in Brussels on Wednesday (see yesterday's EUROPE, p.5). The questions of the lifting of parliamentary immunity are delicate ones, and the presidents of the Parliament have always broached them with great care, she declared, stressing that parliamentary immunity was an instrument that protected the dignity of MEPs and the institution. In this type of affair, in no way should the party of the person concerned be taken into account, she also said. She then made a point of stressing that the documents she referred to in the case of the Socialist MEP Jose Maria Ruiz-Mateos were documents published in the Official Journal
