Troika returns from visit focused on short term - conditions met for granting aid to Palestinian Authority

Brussels, 14/03/2001 (Agence Europe) - The European Troika headed by Ms Lindh and formed of Chris Patten and Miguel Angel Moratinos has just returned from a visit to the Middle East where it met the main Israeli and Palestinian leaders, as well as Egyptian President Moubarak. Their visit focused mainly on immediate concerns, such as the cessation of violence that has disturbed the region for several months and the lifting of the economic and financial blockade imposed by Israel in the Palestinian territories. On this point, the Europeans detected a determination on the part of Israelis and Palestinians to resume dialogue in order to come out of a situation that appears more like an impasse with every passing day. The visit will also have allowed the EU to release EUR 60 million in favour of the functioning of the Palestinian Authority, which has been bled white since the suspension of payments due to it by Israel. The Palestinians have in fact accepted the conditions set by the Union for payment of this aid, mainly monitoring in the field by the IMF. The EU also called on the international community to implement financial aid in favour of the Palestinians, and the countries of the Arab League, which will be meeting at the Amman summit on 27 and 28 March, seem to agree on the exact amount of aid that they plan to give the Palestinians. Furthermore, according to a Commission spokesman, a meeting of potential donors could be organised after the Amman summit.
