Brussels, 23/02/2001 (Agence Europe) - Mischaele Schreyer, European Commissioner responsible for the budget, is on a two-day visit to Tallinn where she has met, among others, Prime Minister Mart Laar and Alar Streimann, head of the delegation for negotiations over EU membership. The Commissioner said she was struck by the progress made by Estonia (16 chapters out of 29 have provisionally been closed), and declared that one of the greatest challenges for the Estonian Administration was to improve its ability to manage Community funds. She recalled that the Commission was financing a 1 million euro Phare project in view of improving internal financial control, and expressed the hope that Estonia would be the second country, after Bulgaria, to receive accreditation within the SAPARD Agency (pre-accession aid to agriculture).
